I’m going to be honest. I’ve never really been a fan of Valentine’s Day. Even when my hubby was alive and I had a “Valentine,” we just didn’t give two hoots about it. In fact, every year we would agree not to celebrate the ridiculous Hallmark holiday. We especially didn’t believe in spending a lot of money on Valentine’s Day gifts and activities. But every year I would break my promise by getting him a (cheap) gag gift and a funny card. Of course, he would completely forget what day it was, in true man fashion. But he would encourage me to do something for myself, some sort of “Valentine’s Day self-care,” like wine in a bath. And that was the extent of our so-called Valentine’s Day celebrations. It was cute. And fun. And no big deal.
So, now that I’m a single lady again, you would think that Valentine’s Day is still a non-event to me, right?
Well, kinda. I still don’t care a whit for the made-up holiday. However, one thing that has become very important to me since becoming a widow is self-care. Women don’t practice this necessary ritual often enough and I was guilty of the same for many, many years. For the past couple of years, though, I have made taking care of myself a top priority. And I believe this decision has helped me not only through my grief journey, but also in my journey in navigating the brave new world of single motherhood. So, this Valentine’s Day I want to encourage all women, but especially single women, to use this day to focus on the one thing that gets neglected far too often: yourself.

Self-Care Activities
Here are some ways you can treat yo’self on Valentine’s Day that doesn’t cost a lot of money:
- Get a mani-pedi or a massage.
- Buy a new book and spend an hour reading in the park.
- Try a new workout class. Might I suggest yoga?
- Take a nap.
- Take the day off and do anything you want. Or nothing at all.
- Go enjoy a movie.
- Have lunch with a friend.
- Spend a few hours exploring a new city.
- Grab a fancy coffee and listen to your favorite podcast.
Self-Care Splurges
Or you can spend a little more and get yourself a little something special. These are my favorites:
Intelex Microwaveable Cozy Slippers. For those cold winter nights that you just want to lay on the couch and keep your tooties warm.
Luxury Bamboo Bath Caddy. There is nothing like taking a long, hot, relaxing bath. Add some wine and a bath bomb…heaven.
Pharao Jewelry. One of my favorite new jewelry brands. The simplicity of her designs are perfection.
Plum Pretty Sugar Long Sleeve Pajamas. A cozy and beautiful pair of pajamas. Pretty enough to wear all day!
Backslash Fit Smart Yoga Mat. A comfy, smart, self-rolling mat any yogi would love!
Veuve Clicquot Rose. A little sparkling rose…all to yourself.
Sperry’s Saltwater Wool Embossed Rain Boot. Because everyone deserves to be cute and comfortable even in the rainiest, coldest weather.
Lovers Gonna Love T-Shirt. I adore this clothing brand. I can’t get enough of her shirts. They’re soft, fit perfectly, and the messages are perfect.
Whether you’re single, taken, a mom, or not, I hope you take some time to indulge in a little Valentine’s Day self-care. Even better, I hope you start to incorporate some regular self-care into you routine. I promise, you will thank yourself for making the effort (and, honestly, so will everyone who has to be around you!). Happy self-care day, y’all!
