Over the past few days I’ve been hanging a LOT of wall decor. This used to be a really frustrating process for me not too long ago, but now it’s a breeze! See, years ago when I first had my own little space to decorate, figuring out how to hang wall decor straight and level was so frustrating for me. I hate measuring and math and all things technical; I’m more of an “eyeball it and see if it works” type of girl. But that method often led to a billion holes in the wall before I finally got it right. Not so pretty.
But, a few years ago I learned a neat little trick that has made hanging pictures, shelves, etc., SO MUCH EASIER. I thought I’d share it with you today because, seriously, this was life changing for me. Maybe this little tip doesn’t come as a surprise to many of you smarty pants out there, but I know that there’s got to be someone who could benefit from this trick!

First, lay your picture or whatever it is you want to hang on it’s face. In my case, I was hanging one of my farmhouse shelves.
Using painter’s tape (I love Scotch blue tape), take a strip long enough to go from one hanging hardware piece to the other on your wall decor. You’ll need the ends of the tape to cover all of the hanging hardware.
Next, use a pen to make a mark where the center of the hanging hardware falls on the tape.
Now take your piece of tape and figure out where you want it on the wall. If you need to center it, use a ruler or measuring tape to measure from the wall’s edge to your mark on the tape, making sure you get identical measurements on each side. Adjust accordingly.
Once you’ve got your tape centered, place the edge of a level along the top edge of the tape to make sure you’re wall decor will hang level. Adjust the tape up or down accordingly.
Once your tape is level, you’re ready to make your holes! Since I was hanging a heavy shelf that would be holding heavy objects, I used my favorite wall anchors. Using the mark you made on your tape, drill an anchor (or drive a nail) through the wall right at the top of the mark on your tape. Repeat on the other side.
Remove the tape and hang your wall decor!
Wasn’t that easy? Perfectly level shelves in under 10 minutes. I told you it was life-changing!
