Several months ago in one of my very first posts, I talked about a book called The Green Beauty Guide by Julie Gabriel. In short, this book started me on my quest to remove all the products from my collection that contained any toxic chemicals (which pretty much included everything I owned). I began using more natural, organic products on my skin and stopped using the harsh prescription medication that my dermatologist had me on for years and years. This was to be a mini-experiment for me, one that would tell me once and for all whether my mom was right after all these years of nagging me that I should stop all the nasty meds my doctor kept giving me.
Flash forward several months and I can tell you with certainty that mom was right (moms always are, no?). As Ms. Gabriel points out in The Green Beauty Guide, most of the cosmetics and beauty products on the market these days are filled with harsh, irritating chemicals, many of which are toxic, and yet no one is regulating this industry. In essence, the very products we rely on to “fix” our skin conditions are actually causing those conditions! Although it has taken several months of trial and error, my skin is now clearer than it has been in a very long time and I am using nothing but pure, natural products, many of which were tested and recommended by Ms. Gabriel.
(As a personal side note, one huge surprise for me was discovering that the birth control pill broke me out like crazy! Most doctors will tell you that the BC pill prevents or reduces acne, but that is not the case for all women. I was one of the lucky few who suffered more aggravated skin problems because of the pill, not to mention the havoc that synthetic hormones wreaked on my mood (read: nutcase).)
All this is not to say that I don’t suffer from the occasional break-out. I do. But they are now becoming fewer and less severe and my skin looks and feels healthier than it ever has. If anyone is struggling with skin problems and looking for a natural solution, I highly recommend that you read The Green Beauty Guide. Ms. Gabriel, has also started an organic beauty product line called Petite Marie Organics. Her Skinsaver lotion is becoming very popular and I have recently ordered a jar. I’ve only been using it for a few days but so far I can say that it is very light and feels great on the skin. You can find Skinsaver on the Petite Marie Organics website here. Also, check out The Green Beauty Guide Blog here, and if you’re interested in buying the book, just click on it under my “I Recommend” column to the right!
